Furman Advantage
The Furman Advantage Program provides students with summer stipends to complete
research with Furman faculty or to subsidize internships in venues such as Washington,
DC. Advantage internships are designed to provide students with meaningful academic-related
experiences that will aide them with career preparation. The stipends provided
by the program help students to offset their living costs or supplement their
salaries. In the past, Furman Political Science majors have participated in
Advantage internships with organizations such as the National Journal and the
Department of Justice, and worked with a variety of elected officials at all
levels of government.
"I worked with Dr. Jim Guth on a variety of projects
involving religion and politics. I spent several weeks looking up material
for Dr. Guth to use in papers and other projects. A majority of my time was
spent updating one of Dr. Guth's pet projects, a database of U.S. Congressional
Representatives and their religious affiliations. Dr. Guth has maintained
this project for the last 10 Congresses, and I found and entered data from
the past three Congressional elections. This research took us through the
resurgence of the Democratic Party in 2006 and yielded wonderful data about
the efforts of the Democratic Party to recruit more religious candidates to
run for national office." - Matt Giebert, class of 2011
