The Washington Internship Program is the oldest engaged learning program
at Furman. For almost three decades Furman students have been traveling
to Washington, D.C., during either the spring or summer terms, to learn
about politics "up close and personal." The center-piece of
the program is an internship arranged for the student by The Washington
Center. Internships are taylored to the student's interests and may
include work on Capitol Hill, a government agency, an interest group,
a law office, or one of a myriad other institutions. Typically a student
will work at his or her internship for 35 hours per week. The remainder
of the week is spent in a weekly seminar or conducting political science
fieldwork. Students receive credit for three political science courses:
PSC 507 - The Washington Experience, PSC 505 - Fieldwork in Politics,
and an upper division course that rotates each term. Students live in
luxury apartments in locations that vary from Arlington, Virginia to
Bethesda, Maryland.
