| Since 2001, the department has sent students to the Canadian Parliament,
Ottawa, Ontario, from mid-May to mid-June to serve as interns under the
auspices of the Western Kentucky Canadian Parliamentary Internship program.
Dr. James Baker, Professor of History, serves as Director of the program.
In this capacity, Professor Baker recruits students for the program, coordinates
their placements with members of Parliament, orients students upon their
arrival in Ottawa, and arranges meetings with various dignitaries (including
the US Ambassador to Canada) during their five-week stay in the Canadian
capital.
This program is a marvelous opportunity for students to study the legislative
process of another country and to make comparisons with the United States;
students with French language skills are especially encouraged to apply.
Professor Glen Halva-Neubauer serves as the local contact for students
interested in participating in the program. This is a credit-bearing
opportunity, and Professor Halva-Neubauer assists students in arranging
internship or independent study credit for their experience in Ottawa.
One or two students are accepted into the program per year. At present,
students receive financial assistance to attend this program, but that
support is not guaranteed.
