The focus of the trip is recent history and politics, particularly revolutionary
movements and their political aftermath. We will look closely at the role
of indigenous peoples in the making of the modern nation. Over our ten weeks
we will visit as many sites as possible within each of the four countries.
This will include key areas in the history of the civil conflicts, centers
of government, universities, contemporary Indian villages, and pre-Hispanic
ruins. We will hear from various speakers, including former combatants, political
leaders, grassroots organizers and academics. We will visit major cities and
many rural areas. In addition, we will of course find opportunities for “R
& R” at beaches, in the mountains, and in rain forests.
Applications will be taken in Fall Term. The first interest meeting will
be announced at the beginning of that term.
