The Scandinavia Program

Politics and Policy in the U.S. and Scandinavia

The Scandinavia Program is a May Experience study away and abroad program offered exclusively by the Political Science Department. During the 3 week program, students travel to Washington D.C. as well as to the capital cities of three Scandinavian countries: Oslo, Norway - Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm Sweden.

The American welfare state, the public policies designed to alleviate human suffering and provide an economic safety net is quite different from its counterparts in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Exploring these differences while touring these illustrious cities will provide students with the opportunity to observe policy differences and understand the complex factors that help explain these contrasts. The courses in this program will focus primarily on how culture and political institutions account for the differences in public policies.

Political Science professors Brent Nelsen and Dorianne Norwood led the maiden voyage of the Scandinavia Program in May 2009.
