-"Socialized Medicine? Dispellng the Myths"
Panel Discussion and Q&A session by Furman professors and a representative from the medical community about the healthcare myths circulated by the media, their origins, as well as legitimate implications of healthcare reform proposals, including policy, economic, and ethical considerations. The event was sponsored by the Furman Debate Society and the Political Science Club.

-"Reclaiming Conservatism: Will the Constitution Still Matter After Bush and Obama?"
Former Congressman Mickey Edwards argued that the modern conservative movement has abandoned its former principles of limited government and individual liberty, and that it should return to the United States Constitution for inspiration.

-Graduate School Information Session & Symposium
The Political Science Department recently hosted Dr. Paul Kellstedt of Texas A&M and Furman Graduate Chris Anderson (PhD candidate at Texas A&M), who talked with students about graduate programs in Political Science. Following the information session, Dr. Kellstedt presented his research, "Over time dynamics of the gender gap in policy attitudes."

-The Riley Institute Hosts Former Assistant Secretary of State Hodding Carter.
Carter's address and panel discussion focused on campaign reform of American politics. Hodding Carter is professor of Public Policy at UNC-Chapel Hill and director of the non-partisan group Americans for Democratic Reform. Carter has regularly appeared as a commentator on NBC, ABC, CBS, CBC, and PBS.

-The Riley Institute Hosts Helmut Schafer, Former State Minister of Foreign Affairs for Germany
"Germany and American Foreign Policy in the Obama Era" - September 30 at 7pm in Shaw Hall. Helmut Schafer has been a major policy maker and political leader in Germany for over 30 years, first as a member of the German Parliament and then as State Minister of Foreign Affairs for Germany.

-CLP's: Islam and Middle East Symposium
September 15 at 7pm in Furman Hall 214 - Ramadan: The Holiest Month in Islam - Dr. Akan Malici and Dr. Alfons Teipen.

-The Riley Institute Brings Governor Madeleine Kunin
Madelein Kunin is a three-term governor of Vermont and ambassador to Switzerland, deputy secretary of education under Secretary Riley, founder and president of the Institute of Sustainable Communities, and and active advocate for Women in Politics. Her lecture, based on her book "Pearls, Politics, and Power: How Women can Win and Lead" will be held at 7pm on Monday, September 21, in Younts Conference Center.
